the old fisherman

by william blanes

There was once an old fisherman

Who sat in his little boat

Out in the coast of some far away country

As the waves beat against his little boat

They did so with rhythm and song

this the old fisherman could hear

Seldom do the elements discover

That there are those who are listening

There are few who look but fewer who hear

The old man had a keen ear for such things

He was schooled in the ways of life

And while he listened to the waves he chuckled

For the water reminded him of the joyous laughter

Of the children in his village

But then suddenly the waters stopped singing and playing along

And there was silence

For now a greater power was communicating through them

It was the one that the old man called the overall

I've known you forever - said the old man, -

In my childhood I wondered about you

In my adolescence I came to respect you

In my manhood I believed in you

In my old age I see your manifest destiny

I think you are beautiful and I thank you,

I am yours

There was silence

And then there were these words

I am yours

The old fisherman had fallen asleep in his boat

The sun was sinking over the horizon

He rowed back to shore knowing that dream was a reality

And that reality was also a dream

He wondered if he was now really asleep or was he awake
