mermaid and the turtle

by william blanes

And yesterday's sand has long since been dusted from the soles of her feet

She walks a different ground now, untouched by his presence
Yet his spirit is the nature of hawk, hovering still amidst currents, overseeing

The day before they were both different beings
She who now wanders alone was then a beautiful mermaid, the pride of the sea
Prisoner of one fierce and dangerous dragon

He supported nine heads upon his vast shoulders, and with these he uttered words that instilled such fear into this bewildering mermaid that she could not escape
She was a prisoner not of the dragon in fact, but of her own fears

This captivity had begun sometime in the mermaid's childhood
And it went on for so long that time became frozen and the mermaid remained a child within as her body grew up

Her innocence was still virgin to the ways of the world, unsuspecting of malice
Once, years before her abduction the mermaid had, in a fortuitous event, met him
He who was now a hawk had then been a very very small turtle, although endowed with great fame as a master of the then unknown world of dreams

When this turtle slept, the inner silence which it would attain as it created could penetrate and affect all the surrounding beings, inspiring an enduring calmness to rise forthwith, a peace that changed all things
All things dark became bright under this light the little turtle endowed, much like the light the wonderful mermaid shed on everything that came near her

By chance, or by no chance at all, the turtle had come to sleep near the dragon's lair after a long swim across the oceans

As it slept the dragon was overcome by a feeling it had never before experienced and it fell to sleep, a rare occasion for the nine headed monster

The astute dragon had let down its guard
With this the mermaid, who because of a similar nature was not put to sleep by the turtles creative dreaming, slipped out of the cave in which she had been retained for so long, and she swam

At first she froze, dazzled by the peaceful beauty that underwater world was submerged in, but soon she was up and about, unaware that the precious mood that she was immersed in had been caused by the little turtle

She swam and swam, inspecting every little mount or crevice for some time until at last she came face to face with the turtle

It was love at first sight

The turtle awoke to a sight more beautiful than any he had ever dreamed up
The mermaid peered into the deep eyes of the most loving and benevolent creature she would ever meet
At once the turtle, gifted with the power of creation, changed into a dolphin and so quickly he and the mermaid began to swim away from the dragons domain

But with the awakening of the turtle came the awakening of the dragon, and he too wanted the mermaid, so he gave chase to the two

With all its strength the dolphin swam as fast as he could, now carrying the mermaid, yet the dragon was at its heels and closing in

Knowing that they would be unable to escape the dragon, the dolphin released the mermaid and turned around to face the dragon

The evil dragon was coming towards the dolphin at great speed, and surely it would destroy the dreamer on impact, but at the moment when the two were to crash into one another, the dolphin willed himself into a gigantic whale, and with one big gulp it swallowed the dragon

This was not enough to exterminate the evil-doer so after swallowing the dragon the whale became a burst of flames which was immediately put out by the seas
All that was left were a few bubbles drifting upwards towards the heavens of air

The mermaid was heartbroken, her love was gone, but she was free, and so saddened she swam ashore to leave the waters forever and die at the shore of the sea to which she was born and meet her heart in the heavens, but alas, soon after she had left the wave break and lain on the sand she noticed that she was not one who was perishing

Her tails and scales had given way to two beautiful legs and the mermaid was now a woman

Meanwhile the bubbles had risen to the surface
And where the world of sea and air meet, there at the swaying border between worlds arose a hawk of high degree

It was he who had risen as a seemingly normal group of rising bubbles in the ocean
It was he who had now changed into a hawk and taken flight to search for his loved one

The hawk witnessed the metamorphosis from mermaid to woman
He had willed it and with a screech he called to her from the air

This was today, and the mermaid looked up and recognized him from a distance
He swooped down to her encounter and landed on the ground beside her, immediately transforming himself into a man and match her

The mermaid and the turtle

The woman and the man

You and I
